The sound of crying woke up Demie from her slumber. She slowly opened her eyes and glanced at the digital clock on her side. The time glowing was 4:11am. The young mother sighed faintly. After giving birth to Talia and being a mother for 3 years, she should’ve been used to this by now. Having a new child should’ve been clockwork for her. However, it seemed her mind and body was reset. It was like she was a new mother all over again.

She was about to leave the warmth of the bed until she felt shifting from behind her. A kiss was then planted on her temple. “I’ll deal with it,” a tired male voice spoke. The red echidna turned her head to catch Guilt about to move away. The female was ready to protest since he already took care of the baby late night yesterday, but was stopped by a quick kiss to the lips. “Just go back ta zeep, amour,” he muttered while licking her lips playfully.

The young woman couldn’t help, but giggle at her husband’s manner. At a time like this, he would still be drowsy. However, he always had some kind of energy to act like his usual goofy self to make her smile. “Alright, babe,” she whispered back. The white porcupine chuckled before giving one last lick to her lips then leaving their bedroom. ‘He’s definitely too good to me,’ Demie thought as she fell back asleep.

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!

Her silver eyes stared at the alarm clock before smacking the button to make it quiet again. ‘I believe I need to find a better wakeup call than the sounds of beeps.’ She stretched lightly her side then turned to face her husband. Demie was only met with an empty spot. Her ears twitched in confusion. ‘He didn’t return?’ She crawled to look over the edge of Guilt’s side to see if he accidentally fell off the bed. Just like before, the red female only saw an empty floor. ‘Then again, I would have heard him fall off.’ A sweat drop formed at the back of her head, ‘Unless I was really out of it to not notice.’

“Mama!” A red blur barged through the door and tackled hugged the woman!

“Wah!” Demie fell back as her arms instinctively hugged back the unknown object that crashed.

“Happy Mother’s Day, Mama!” chirped a familiar voice.

“Talia?” When her brain finally registered her daughter’s sentence, the country gal immediately turned her attention to the nearby calendar. The month was May, and circled in red was day 12.

“Happy Mother’s Day,” the 3-year-old repeated with giggles.

The young mother looked at Talia with a big smile, “How could I forget?” She laughed then started to tickle little porcupine. The toddler screamed with glee as she tried to fight off her mother’s tickles. After a while, Demie stopped her playful assault. “Where are your father and little sister?”

“Papa is making breakfast and Flower is already sitting at the table.”

“And your little friend?”

Talia gave a cute pout. “She’s sleeping lazily.”

Demie laughed softly at her daughter’s demeanor. As much as the red porcupine adored her pet, which was given by “Tante Nicole”, the little creature was still a baby in some way. When she’s awake, she’s quite active to play with Talia. However, when not bothered, you would see her sleeping with no care in the world.

“Shall we have breakfast now?” As soon as the red echidna saw an eager nod, she picked up the little porcupine and exited the bedroom.

Guilt hummed “Frere Jacques” as he moved the pan back and forth to keep the bottom of the French toast from burning. With a spatula, he lifted the battered bread to see if it was ready to flip. Seeing the color gold and brown, the old porcupine moved the breakfast food to the other side to cook. The smell of sugar and cinnamon caramelizing made his nose twitch in delight.

Suddenly, a kiss on his cheek was given. “Smells great, hun.”

He smiled in amusement. “I know,” he smugly claimed.

The answer was a light smack at the back of his head. “Show off.”

“Papa in trouble,” giggled a small voice along with a delighted gurgle and clapping.

The husband turned around and smiled brightly for the lovely ladies in his life. “I’ll be off za ‘ook when I serve zome French toast.”

“You were always the better cook than me,” Demie stated as she puts Talia in her designated seat at the family table.

The bomb technician only replied with a chuckle before returning to his cooking. He let the piece of bread crisp up a bit more then placed it with the other stacks of French toast. “Breakfast is now served,” Guilt said cheerfully and placed the finished food on the table.

“Mama! Here’s my and Flower’s gift for you.” Talia jumped off her seat and walked up to Demie. The older female looked on in curiosity of what her daughter was doing. The little porcupine was tying something around her mother’s wrist. When she was done, she stepped back and smiled brightly. “You can look, Mama!”

The red echidna brought her hand up to see a seashell bracelet. Her eyes widened a bit before looking at the 3-year-old. “It’s beautiful, sweetie, but haven’t I seen this before?”

“It’s a match to Papa’s bracelet,” the little girl admitted with a toothy grin.

“She’s right.” When his wife turned her head to him, Guilt lifted up one of his hands to reveal the similar bracelet. They were both made from seashells from Silver Beach, the first place where they walked of their first “date.”

Demie pulled her daughter into a hug and kissed her cheek. “I love it.”

“Flower also helped to pick the shells,” Talia stated proudly while pointing over to her baby sister.

Said baby, clapped happily while giggling. The flourishing flower of the Laking Family was just born a few months back. She was also born as a red porcupine, but had Guilt’s eyes. Like most babies, she was a very playful and happy baby. The young mother laughed a bit before standing up and walking over to her second child. “And thank you too.” She picked up the second red porcupine and kissed her forehead lovingly.

The old man smiled faintly at the sight while gathering the finished dishes to the sink to be cleaned.

Night had fallen. Guilt gave himself a mighty stretch when he reached the top of the stairs. His bones cracked and his muscles tense causing a sense of relief to spread through the lavender porcupine’s body. ‘’at felt good!’ He grinned goofily to no one in particular.

The day for Demie had been very good. After breakfast, the Laking Family went for a long stroll at the park. As usual, the children at the park gave Guilt a hug tackle hug before going over to his wife to give her a hug and wish her a Happy Mother’s day. When they returned from their walk, Guilt’s family was there for a visit. It was small family reunion for the old porcupine and a good excuse to have a party for the mothers.

As the father headed towards the direction of the bedroom, he instantly spotted Demie standing outside of it. A bit of confusion and worry came to him at the sight of his wife. Was there something wrong? Are the children okay? As soon as Guilt came over, the red echidna instantly brought herself into his arms. “Amour?”

“It’s nothing,” she said softly as she snuggled into his chest. He stared at her for a while before rubbing his head against hers. A few moments of silence passed until the young woman spoke again. “Saul?”

“Yes, mi amour?”

“Be honest with me.”

Guilt kept Demie closer. “Anything.”

“Have I really been a good mother?”

The old male kept quiet before grabbing the female’s chin to make her stare into his flame colored eyes. “Diana Laking nee Vermont, you are the love of my life, mother of my children, and daughter-in-law/sister-in-law to my parents and siblings. You have once told me that I’ve been too good for you. To be quite honest with you, you’ve been too good for me.” The porcupine led the echidna into their bedroom while locking the door. He laid her gently on the bed. “You’ve given an old man like me everything. You’ve given me love and children that I can call my own. You’ve raised our morning dew and our flourishing flower to be very happy and healthy children. They both love you.” Guilt then brought his lips close to Demie’s, “And I love you.”

The wife stared at her husband deeply as small tears formed from her silver eyes. She wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled to seal their night with a passionate kiss.
